If you have taken PCM/PCB in Class 11 and are unsure whether to target NEET, JEE, or both, this guide breaks down the differences in syllabus, difficulty and career outcomes.
NEET and JEE are the two largest undergraduate entrance exams in India, but they lead to very different careers. Preparing for both is possible only if your subject combination and time allow it.
Syllabus overlap
Both exams test Class 11 and 12 Physics and Chemistry. NEET adds Biology (Botany + Zoology); JEE adds Mathematics. If you have taken PCMB, you technically qualify for both, but the workload roughly doubles.
Exam pattern
- NEET: single pen-and-paper test, 720 marks, Biology-heavy.
- JEE Main: computer-based, held twice a year, Maths-heavy, qualifier for JEE Advanced.
How to decide
Pick the exam that matches the career you actually want — medicine for NEET, engineering for JEE. Do not prepare for both just to keep options open; focused preparation for one almost always beats split effort across two.
If you still want both
Prioritise one as primary (usually based on which subject you are stronger in) and treat the other as a backup, accepting that your ceiling in the backup exam will be lower.
